Whilst driving past a dead tree in Sabi Sands, South Africa, I saw a brief flash of a stripes flick out from the tree. As I came closer, I was gleefully surprised to see such an exquisite pre-sundown sighting of the usually nocturnal large-spotted genet, using the hollow of the dead tree as a lookout post. We spent several minutes sharing a view of the African sunset, before the genet climbed higher and deeper into the dead tree, giving me one of the most heart-warming animal encounters I have experienced.
