We were photographing two lionessses in the dried up bed of the Mkuze river when one of them spotted something high up on the cliff bordering the river. She walked across the sandy bed to the rock face and then, to our surprise, bounded up it. At the time that this image was taken, she had paused to work out the next phase of her route up the near vertical cliff and seemed to be encouraging her sister to follow her, which subsequently happened. The lions disappeared into the undergrowth near the top of the cliff so we never saw what had set them off on this dangerous journey.
