In 2022, the Karoo was ravaged by a huge plague of locusts. They were everywhere, moving in massive swarms of millions. Everything that eats locusts benefitted – birds, small carnivorous mammals and, in particular, other arthropods, especially spiders. Spiderwebs adorned just about every fence and bush in the area, a nightmare for anyone suffering from arachnophobia! I took several photographs of spider-locust interactions, and found that the straight lines of the barbed wire gave this one a unique and menacing feel. The combined efforts of all of the spiders much have lead to many thousands of locust casualties; it felt like a war, with the locusts suffering significant losses. Unfortunately the real collateral damage came from everything else, including the spiders, that was killed by desperate farmers poisoning the locusts.
