We are in October 2022 in the Samburu National Reserve in Kenya. After four consecutive insufficient rainy seasons, the country is experiencing the worst drought in decades. Here flows the Ewaso Ng’iro River, a precious source of water for a multitude of animals. Just before the COVID-19 pandemic, in February 2020, I was taking a series of pictures of an elephant family crossing the river in the same place. Torrential rains fell on the region and the level of the river was at its highest. It is hard to imagine that right here, in this dry riverbed, the baby elephants were submerged. I only saw their trunk out of the water like a snorkel.
