This African Finfoot came skulking along the vegetated river banks of the Mbuluzi River in Eswatini while we were parked on a low water bridge photographing crocodiles in the still water. It lined up for the perfect symmetrical framing with the low hanging palms that enabled me to capture the reflections and framing around the bird as it emerged from the dark undergrowth. This image, for me, captures the true nature and “essence” of this often elusive species in its habitat and the thrill of noticing this magnificent bird as it briefly emerges from its hidden world.
