We watched an Elephant calf nearly being swept away in flood water from a viewing deck at Olifants camp. The herd crossed the river but clearly underestimated the depth and speed/strength of the water. It was distressing to watch, but efforts by the mom and an older sibling saved the calf. Elephants are truly amazing! At one point the water was so deep the calf was carried on the moms trunk. Several times the older sibling rested it’s trunk on the little calf in reassurance while being downstream to stop it washing further away. Elephants are sentient beings and they do not deserve the treatment they often get from humans. It was very far and the light harsh but it was a story worth trying to capture. and tell.
